The Empowerment Project Recap!

By Jessica Maynes, GOTR Spring 2017 Intern on 4/11/2017

Soroptimist International of Chico and Girls on the Run of the North State joined together to present a showing of The Empowerment Project! This amazing documentary film features women in exciting careers that asked themselves the same question most young girls think about: “What do I want to be when I grow up?” By seeing women around the country leading empowering lives, young girls realize they too can reach their goals and overcome obstacles other women have already faced.

The Empowerment Project was encouraging and motivating for girls and women that attended the two showings in Chico on April 4th and April 6th. Prior to the showing, girls had the opportunity to talk about their own goals, passions, and dreams for their future. When asked to share out their thoughts on this topic, girls had some seriously fantastic responses! Girls said their role models were their moms, dads, sisters, teachers, friends, and coaches. Girls shared about times they have felt proud of themselves - answers included mastering specific skills in cheerleading and dance, and passing difficult tests. Dream jobs mentioned were OB/GYN, teacher, professional athelete, and a midwife! SO awesome!

Local women in a variety of inspiring careers were present to answer girls' questions and share about their own journeys to success. These women came from a variety of inspiring professions: Graphic Designer, Forensic Scientist, English Professor, Park Ranger, Veterinarian, Dentist, and Professional Athlete! Each came from a different background and provided a unique perspective on overcoming trials to reach their goals.

This event took place at Chico Jr. High and Bidwell Jr. High and was open to the community. There was a great turnout and the girls were engaged and participated.

The Empowerment Project closely aligns with Heart & Sole and Girls on the Run goals by equipping young girls to make positive life decisions and have the confidence to strive for their goals despite possible obstacles. It was definitely an inspiring experience!

Thank you Soroptimist International for this special opportunity! GOTR also thanks Chico Jr. High and Bidwell Jr. High for their staff support and for allowing us to use their facilities. Thank you to all the professionals that came out to share their stories and inspire young girls. You made a difference! And thank you to all of the exceptional girls that came out to learn, connect with other girls and women, and share their input to help others grow. We appreciate you all!
